Update from the Tax Practitioners Board

Processing times

With the introduction of the new tax agent services regime, the Board has received a high number of applications. Additional resources have been allocated to manage these volumes.

As applicants’ circumstances are unique and require individual consideration, processing times vary from one application to another. The time it may take to process an application can range from a few weeks to a number of months. If you have not yet heard from the Board about your application, please don’t be alarmed. The Board will contact you to request further information or clarification if it is required.

During this period of high registration volumes, our service standard is not where we would like it to be and we ask for your understanding at this time. We are continuing to initiate and implement further measures to assist in processing and improving our service to you.

Portal access

Tax agents and BAS agents who have access to the ATO tax agent portal or BSP view of the portal, can continue to use their current portal access while the Board decides their application. New registrants will require a registration number issued by the Board before they can apply for portal access. The ATO grants portal access and can’t do so until the Board has finalised an application and completed the registration process.

How applications are processed

When we receive your application we conduct a review to ensure that:

  • all parts of the application have been fully completed, and
  • any supporting documentation provided is appropriate

Once we have completed this component we are then able to conduct a preliminary assessment of the suitability of your application for registration.

If information is incomplete or we require additional information to support your application for registration, we will contact you to ask for further details.

Once we have sufficient information to support your registration, it will go through a formal Board assessment process, including but not limited to considering your fitness and propriety to be registered. You will then be notified of the outcome.
